Klopp: Theoretically it s possible to lead Liverpool again, but now, I don t miss coaching
Hupu reported on October 20 that Red Bull’s global football director Klopp accepted an exclusive interview with TheDiaryOfACEO.
(This interview is two and a half hours long, please forgive me for having to split it up...)
[Gossip board] Klopp: I have a good relationship with Edwards; it’s normal for Nunez to have no chance to be dissatisfied with me.
Did you choose to leave Liverpool because the team needs to be rebuilt?
No, no, no, it was not a rebuild, Liverpool was very good at the time. My expectation for myself is that I am a source of energy for everyone in this environment.
Like I did, if anyone is having a hard time, come on, you can have what I don't need. I have to be at my best to be the man who deserves to be the manager of Liverpool.
That's what I was saying that day, when I was like, well, I know it, and then I didn't know it, so I said, okay, let's wait until everybody sees it, and then they can give me a sense of security and all these things that I couldn't do.
Not that, not after that time that we were together, I realized that I didn't want to be that, after that time that we were together, I didn't want to be that kind of person that I didn't want to go on tour in America, but why?
Because I'm enjoying it every day, so you realize I need a break, and no matter what, I'm going to take a break. I need to do something else. You can't do that in that industry.
You can't say, "Ladies and gentlemen, give me a year. See you later." That's not the case. I really think we did what we had to do and expressed what we were feeling and thinking at the time. That was the situation at the time.
I don't have the energy to think about what will happen next. I don't want to think about what happens next. I just want to leave. I was happy to finish the season, but don't ask me what we could do here and what we could do there, it was always my responsibility because yes, I couldn't decide about the money, but everything else, from a certain moment on, was in my hands.
Edwards came back after I left, not because we had problems or anything. Not at all. Well, they just wanted to find a leader for the team,
so Michael, Richard and Anna obviously work very closely together now. So the decision was made, but for a while, Richard, Michael and Julian Ward all left. So it's just me sitting there, um, like taking care of everything, we have to win football games, but everything else falls on my shoulders as well. It was a very stressful time.
So, you were actually forced to take the job of sports director?
Yes, we, and that transfer window, I remember it was with our temporary selection of Schmatek. I don't even know if Julian Ward is still there, lawyers and scouts...
So, do you think you can go back to coach Liverpool in the future? Is this possible?
I said I would never coach another team in England again. So, that means coaching Liverpool. Yes. So, it's theoretically possible.
Theoretically, what would it take for you to be able to do this mentally?
I don't know, I don't even know the specifics. I just... can only say that there must be... conditions. I love my current job. I don’t miss coaching at all, really.
I don’t miss standing in the rain for two and a half or three hours. Well, I also don’t miss going to four, three press conferences a week and doing 12, 10, 12 interviews a week. I don't miss this, I don't miss it.
So I don't miss being in the locker room, I coached so many games, I really went there enough, I didn't want to... I didn't want to die in the locker room just because it smelled so good, so that kind of thing, but maybe there's something about, I'm 58, which is old from your point of view, but from another point of view, I'm not that old, which means I can make a decision in a few years.
I don’t know. Do I have to make a decision today? If it were today, I wouldn't coach again. But thank God I don't have to do that.
Now I am involved in a project that I truly love, I love the people I work with, the clubs we are responsible for, and the countries in which these clubs are based. So I enjoy what I'm doing. In my opinion, I can only do well if I focus 100% on one thing. And that's exactly what I've always wanted to do.
These are things you won’t miss. What will you miss?
Sometimes I miss someone. Yes, sometimes I miss certain people. Like I, I, I hope I, so I don't miss the dressing room but I miss sitting in the restaurant with the players and having a nice chat with them, which is great and it's always great when they're in a good mood. We won a lot of games, so there was always a really good atmosphere in the team.
