Shams: Rockets actively explore trading Whitmore

Basketball

On June 27, according to famous reporter Shams, the Rockets are not expected to make major lineup adjustments in the offseason after completing Durant's blockbuster deal, but are actively exploring the possibility of trading Whitmore.

The Rockets have completed a two-year, $50 million contract renewal with Van Vleet. The team is optimizing the lineup around the new three giants composed of Durant, Shin Kyung and Van Vleet, while creating more opportunities for rookie Reed Shepard. Shams said on the show: "In terms of major operations, the lineup has been basically determined, but the team may use exceptions or free agent signing to make edge adjustments." TA further pointed out that Whitmore is a potential trade target, and the young defender has aroused strong interest from multiple teams. In response, Shams explained: "The Rockets also have a contract for Whitmore, a talented young player who has also received interest from multiple teams in the league. If I were the Rockets, I might trade him for a draft pick or an instant player."

He revealed that the Rockets especially want to get a defensive wing to fill the vacancy left by sending Dillon Brooks away when trading Durant: "If they enter the free market or seek a deal, I think wingers like Dillon Brooks may be the Rockets' target."

As the 20th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Whitmore showed potential in his rookie season, but had limited playing time in the Rockets' deep rotation. He played 51 games last season, averaging 16.2 minutes per game to contribute 9.4 points and 3.0 rebounds. His athleticism and scoring ability have attracted the attention of many rebuilding teams and have become a valuable trading asset under General Manager Stone. Whitmore was originally predicted as a lottery show before the 2023 draft, but eventually accidentally slipped into the Rockets' hands.
