Blockbuster three-party trade may help Phoenix Suns acquire All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns
The Suns underwent a major lineup overhaul during the offseason. By trading Durant and parting ways with Beal, the Suns have effectively restructured their core, with Jaylen Green set to be Devin Booker's running mate for the foreseeable future.
Current rumors have seen Giannis Antetokounmpo's name resurface after reports of offseason conversations with the Knicks reignited trade speculation. While he has always maintained his position with the Bucks, recent updates could present a scenario where the superstar leaves for a better chance at winning. With that in mind, facilitating a trade between the Knicks and Bucks could be a challenge. As a result, B/R's Greg Swartz floated the idea of a three-team trade that would include moving Towns to the Suns to complete the deal. Swartz wrote:
"Booker and Towns have been teammates at Kentucky for 11 years, though the Suns should be interested in a reunion now." The Suns could be the third team in a trade assuming Antetokounmpo goes to New York, Towns goes to Phoenix, and young talent and draft picks like Jalen Green, Dunn, Maluach and/or Mawe go to the Bucks. "A team with Booker, Towns, Dillon, Grayson Allen, O'Neal is at least competitive in the Western Conference." Swartz's trade proposal has several moving parts, but the idea of pairing Towns with Booker certainly has its merits. Here's a potential trade scenario that could facilitate such a deal.
The Suns get: Towns
The Knicks get: Giannis Antetokounmpo
The Bucks get: Jaylen Green, Marvel, Dunn, Dadit, 2026 Wizards first-round pick, 2026 Thunder, Mavericks or 76ers second-round pick, 2028 This deal for the Pacers or the Suns' second-round pick
is attractive to all three parties. Here we focus on analyzing its impact on the development of the Suns. In addition to reuniting the two Kentucky Wildcats, the pairing of Booker and Towns could be significant in transforming Phoenix into a more competitive team in the West.
Towns can be considered one of the best big men in the NBA today. Although he has been criticized for his defensive shortcomings, there is no denying that he is a talented offensive player. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per game, shooting 52.6% from the field and 42.0% from three-point range. The 29-year-old can also safely be considered one of the best floor-spacing big men in the league, given how efficiently he shoots from deep. By pairing Towns with Booker, the Suns will usher in a new era, and their tandem has the potential to pose a threat to some of the top teams in the West.
For the Suns, the partnership between Towns and Booker is quite promising. Unfortunately, to do that, they will need to give up a significant portion of their roster, effectively reducing their depth even further. Without a guaranteed Western Conference playoff spot, such a trade might be too risky. Therefore, it may be wiser to gradually reorganize Booker with young talents than to acquire stars; but this will take time. I wonder if the Suns owner is willing to wait?
