Football

On May 21, La Liga official news, on the morning of May 21, local time in Spain, the Valladolid Provincial Court sentenced five people to commit racial discrimination and insults to Vinicius for one year.

In the 88th minute of Real Madrid's match against Valladolid on December 30, 2022, Vinicius was insulted by these five fans when he was substituted. They shouted insulting remarks to the Brazilian winger, "Bitch-raising, damn monkeys, niggers, dead homosexuals" to the Brazilian winger.

La Liga took the lead in filing a lawsuit and intervened as the sole plaintiff. Vinicius himself, Real Madrid Club and the prosecutor's office also joined the charges. The final sentence included: one year in prison, deprivation of the right to be elected within 1 year, a fine of 1,080 to 1,620 euros, and a ban on engaging in careers or education in the fields of education, sports and leisure within 4 years.

In order to obtain probation for imprisonment, the defendant clearly accepted two conditions: no further crime is allowed within three years, and prohibited from entering any stadium where a national official football event is held during the same period. The court defined racial discrimination against the five defendants under the Spanish criminal law as a "hate crime", and the ruling marked an unprecedented breakthrough in the Spanish sports struggle against racism. In previous cases, similar cases were only convicted of "acts that damage moral integrity" and only talked about racial discrimination as an aggravated plot. The verdict links racial discrimination to crime, and strongly conveys a signal that "football does not tolerate any narrow-mindedness."

This progress stems from La Liga's ongoing commitment to defending sporting spirit and inclusive values. Through the La Liga project to combat discrimination, the agency has carried out legal actions, awareness campaigns and technical tools to identify and report discrimination.

La Liga will continue to work with the government and clubs to ensure that football becomes a safe, respectful and inclusive field for everyone.
