Strictly investigate the Bucks executives: Can you sign Trent with a basic salary? Why spend 20 million to sign Grimes

July 30th, TheAthletic reporter Fred Katz updated the update that TheAthletic recently conducted an investigation of 16 NBA management personnel (no from the 76ers) and asked what they thought restricted free agents Grimes, Kumingga, Gidey and Cameron Thomas each had their respective "fair" contracts.

One of the executives said: "In today's salary cap (in the environment), when you can sign (Bucks guard) Gary Trent Jr. with a basic salary, why do you spend $20 million to sign Quentin Grimes?"

The above executive proposed to give Grimes a three-year, $40 million contract. He said: "We should not sign young players just because they are young. You have to think Grimes will grow up with Maxi to become your starting backcourt."

This offseason, Gary Trent Jr. renewed his contract with the Bucks and signed a two-year, $7.58 million contract. In the 2024-25 season, Gary Trent Jr. played 74 regular season games for the Bucks, averaging 25.6 minutes per game and scored 11.1 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1 steal.

In February this year, Grimes was sent to 76ers by the Mavericks. He played 28 regular season games for the Philadelphia team, averaging 33.7 minutes per game to score 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals.
