Kidd needs to make a choice between coaching the Knicks and potential No. 2025 pick Flag

When the New York Knicks decided to fire Tom Thibodeau, the answer to who will become the new head coach was not immediately revealed. Now, it is reported that Jason Kidd is one of the potential candidates.

But one key problem is that Kidd is still playing for the Dallas Mavericks. Just last season, he led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals and debuted in the NBA Finals.

According to NBA insider Mark Stan, the Knicks plan to apply for permission to interview Kidd for the head coach vacant position.

However, the Knicks are not the only target to covet this current NBA coach. According to SNY reporter Ian Begley, the team also set their sights on Houston Rockets coach Uduka and Minnesota Timberwolves coach Chris Finch. But TheAthletic reporter Kelly Iko pointed out that even if the Knicks formally apply, the Rockets are unlikely to approve Uduka for an interview. Although there are no relevant reports yet, common sense infers that after Finch led the Timberwolves to advance to the Western Conference Finals for two consecutive years, Minnesota is likely to be rejected by the Knicks' request.

However, Kidd's situation is very different - in many ways, the Mavericks hired him to coach Luka Dončić. But according to Tim Kato, Kidd was "dissatisfied" with the management's decision to trade Doncic.

Now, with 18-year-old forward Cooper Flagge expected to become the new core of the team, Kidd may really be at the point of leaving Dallas.

The following are more analysis by Robbie Karan:

"In view of the sudden turn of the Mavericks, they may be willing to part ways with Kidd. When the former management hired Kidd, they clearly aimed to coach Doncic, but now Doncic has left the team, the new leadership has taken office, and the Mavericks won the No. 1 pick in the lottery draw (and therefore hopefully selected Flag). Previously, when trading Anthony Davis The proposed 'three-year championship window period' has now been significantly extended.

Kidd may think that the Knicks are closer to the championship than the Mavericks, especially if Kyrie Irving is likely to miss many games next season. The Mavericks may also be willing to let him go to the East."

In theory, if the Knicks want to "poach" Kidd from the Mavericks, they need to complete it through a transaction - but similar cases have been precedent before. In fact, when Kidd transferred from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Brooklyn Nets coach in 2014, it was achieved through a trade.

Kidd played for the Knicks in the 2012-13 season, spent the last season of his career, and coached Knicks star Jaylen Brunson in the Mavericks.

As of now, the Mavericks have not approved Kidd for the Knicks interview.

But if they let go and New York management is satisfied with Kidd's interview performance, the famous coach may need to make a choice between "coaching the Knicks' existing lineup" and "accompanying the potential star Flagg, the growth."
