Former Lakers player Danny Green said: The Lakers won t win the championship with their current roster

Basketball

According to an article written by US sports media F/W reporter Nico Martinez. When the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis for Luca Doncic, they got younger, but don't get me wrong: they're still trying to win now. Unfortunately, the public still has a disagreement on how the Lakers will be compared to other teams in the West before the critical summer arrives, with former champion Danny Green even saying they won’t win anything at all unless a major roster adjustment is made. “I think they’re very explosive offense,” Green said on the All the Smoke podcast. “I think they lack a lot on defense…I don’t know how many years he (James) has left, and it’s really hard to win a championship when your best player is already 40… Next year, LeBron will turn 41… He can still average 30, 20s, but I just don’t think they’re winning the championship with this formula now.”

It’s important to note that Green has no malice against the Lakers. He was part of the 2020 Finals team, and he witnessed LeBron’s greatness firsthand when he averaged 25.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game, ranking second in the 35-year-old MVP vote. Entering next season, LeBron is not expected to drop sharply, but he will be 40 years old and is trying to end his career. With retirement always in his mind, people have to wonder how long James can play at the Elite All-Star level.

Plus the loss of Anthony Davis, it's easier to understand why Green (and other critics) are hesitant about the Lakers. They disbanded the duo who won the last championship and there is no guarantee that their current roster will be sufficient to complete the task. Even after Luca Doncic joined, the Lakers lost the game in the first round of the brutal showdown against the Minnesota Timberwolves after head coach Redick maximized his skills. Despite the best efforts of the new squad, they can only win one game before being eliminated, and there is no easy solution to move into next season.

General Manager Pelinka's first priority is to add a center and fill the frontcourt for Luka Doncic. They were trapped in Jaxon Hayes last season, but there are several upgrade options this summer, and they may become stronger in the frontcourt in the future due to limited flexibility in the cap, the Lakers can only change so much, but if they can add another star, that could make them a popular team in the West. Austin Reeves, Dalton Knecht and their last first-round pick should be enough to get a big name like potential Kevin Durant and even Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Assuming they don't repeat the same mistakes, the Lakers will inevitably make some major roster upgrades next season, but that may still not be enough. In the Wild West, teams like the Thunder, Rockets and Timberwolves will only become stronger, and the Lakers must do everything they can to make sure they don't fall further than they are now, otherwise as Green said: With the current Lakers lineup, nothing can be won.

What do you think?
